Ayreon is a musical project founded by Dutch songwriter and producer Arjen Anthony Lucassen. Known for its progressive rock, metal, and eclectic mix of genres, Ayreon’s albums are characterized by their complex storylines and large ensemble of vocalists. The project began with The Final Experiment in 1995, often cited as one of the first metal operas. Ayreon's discography includes notable works such as Into the Electric Castle (1998), Universal Migrator (2000), and The Source (2017). The project's live performances, rare until 2017, feature a vast array of guest musicians and have been captured in albums like Ayreon Universe – The Best of Ayreon Live (2018). Ayreon’s music blends rock with classical, folk, and electronic elements, and continues to explore new themes and concepts, with Transitus (2020) marking a return to its science fiction roots.
