A musician who plays a gritty version of heartland rock or an Alabama rocker who performs no-wave styled rockabilly would be ways to describe Dan Sartain. With constant comparisons to Johnny Cash and with a very distinct face marked by sharp bone structure and topped with a slight pomp, Sartain does fit the image of a contemporary Man in Black. Sartain began self-releasing his music in 2001 and quickly grabbed the attention of several independent music labels, including Jack Whites's Third Man Records, which have subsequently helped spread Sartain's modern take on the 1950s favorite genres.
