The Hamburger Symphoniker (or Hamburg Symphony Orchestra), despite having a name that might cause the less informed English speaker to crack a smile, has, in fact, become one of the world's most respected symphony orchestras since its first concert, which was staged in October 1957. In addition to providing an extensive seasonal concert showcase each year, the orchestra works in conjunction with the Hamburg State Opera House to put on at least 20 operas and ballets. Led by renowned English conductor Jeffrey Tate, the Hamburger Symphoniker has an extensive list of chief and guest conductors who have gone on to achieve considerable international acclaim as a result of their work with the orchestra, serving to further cement its great reputation throughout the world.
