Lakis & Achwach, an ensemble fronted by Lakis Jordanopoulos, might be based out of Vienna and might speak German, but the group of nine musicians recreate the traditional Greek music style. Straying from quintessential Greek songs common in most repertoires, the collective instead reinterprets more obscure instrumentals and legends into new songs. The result is Balkan-influenced folk laden with traditional Greek themes like xenos, exile, betrayal and journeying home, but sung in a manner that transcends ancient Greece into modern times. Since forming in the late 1980s, Lakis & Achwach has continued to spread Greek music throughout Europe.
