Originally written as an intermezzo - or a short opera buffa meant to be performed in between acts of a serious opera - Giovanni Battista Pergolesi's La Serva Padrona (The Servant Turned Mistress) is now enjoyed worldwide as an opera in itself. Based on the libretto by Gennaro Antonio Federico, the opera follows a cunning maidservant who tricks her aging master into marrying her, and is often referred to as a bridge between the baroque and classical periods in opera history. La Serva Padrona has been adapted into multiple stage productions and also into a feature film.
