Grup Yorum, formed in 1985 at Marmara University, is a Turkish band renowned for its politically charged music, blending Turkish and Kurdish folk with left-wing themes. Influenced by Latin American Nueva canción, their debut album Siyrilip Gelen was released in 1987. Known for addressing issues like capitalism and anti-Americanism, the band has faced significant political repression, including arrests, torture, and concert bans. Despite this, their music remains popular both in Turkey and internationally. They have released twenty-three albums, including İlle Kavga (2017), and a film, F-Tipi (2012), addressing political imprisonment. Grup Yorum's members have faced numerous arrests, and their cultural center, İdil Kültür Merkezi, has been frequently raided. Their activism includes hunger strikes and solidarity concerts, reflecting their commitment to social justice and resistance against oppression.
