The Dresdner Philharmonie (Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra) is a symphony orchestra based in Dresden, Germany that was founded in its current incarnation in 1915 and is financially supported by the city. The orchestra has served to launch the careers of some of the world's most celebrated conductors and soloists, of whom the renowned conductor Kurt Masur stands as one of the more prominent. Despite being virtually sequestered from the rest of the world when Dresden was inducted into the German Democratic Republic (East Germany), the Dresdner Philharmonie was able to reassert itself, following Germany's reunification, as one of the world's premier philharmonic orchestras.
