Rock 'n roll and hip-hop are two genres that don't always meld together so well. However, groups such as the Beastie Boys have proven that it can be done--and done well--if the two disparate styles are handled carefully. Los Angeles-based collective The Pricks attempts to toe this fine line and manages to do so in respectable fashion. Equally inspired by the punk rock of the Clash and the hard-edged gangsta rap of N.W.A., the group combines vocals from two emcees with live instrumentation that includes drums, bass and keyboards. Various aspects of Southern California culture, such as graffiti and skateboarding, also add to The Pricks' overall style and sound.
